We continue to Onset for a fun Cruise down the Cape Cod Canal.
Learn about the fascinating history and points of interest along the Canal, including the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Sagamore Bridge, Bourne Bridge, Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge, Gray Gables, Herring Run, Aptucxet Trading Post, Scusset Beach Fish Pier, Sandwich Boat Basin
and Cape Cod Bay. This man-made canal, a National Historic Civil Engineering landmark, is the widest sea level canal (without locks) in the world. It was built to create more efficient nautical trade routes, opening in July 1914. Passage through the Canal is safer than having to maneuver around the dangerous shoals and unpredictable currents surrounding the Outer Cape, and also saves ships more than 160 miles of travel, instead of having to navigate around the tip of Cape Cod.
This evening feast on a traditional New England Lobsterbake.
Wednesday, June 11
We journey to Woods Hole, and board our ferry, together with our motor coach, and cruise to the enchanting island of MARTHA’S VINEYARD. Known for its appeal to the rich and famous, including the first family, it welcomes all tourists. Oak Bluffs is noted for its Ginger Bread Cottages, located at the Methodist Camp Meeting Grounds. We tour the island, with time for shopping and lunch on our own in EDGARTOWN. It was here that the famous movie “Jaws” was filmed! The island has many picturesque beaches and natural harbors, and lovely whaling captains’ homes lining the waterfront.
We return on the late afternoon ferry, and this evening enjoy dinner.
